Religious people are not immune from temptations and problems

Life is not easy in this world. There are many problems and trials which will come into the life of everyone on the earth. Many temptations may arrive which can bring the downfall of supposedly righteous people if they are not careful. Religious leaders of the various churches are generally held to a higher standard.

Yet problems and temptations can come to anyone, including those who would seem to be safe from succumbing to them. Some people who are constantly preaching good and fighting evil sometimes fall short.

Sarah K. Burris wrote an article in Raw Story entitled: “Embattled Texas megachurch pastor quits after admitting to ‘unhealthy’ Instagram relationship.”

A pastor in a Southern Baptist sect announced that he was resigning after it was discovered that he had an Instagram relationship. He is married with three children. He admitted the problem.

The pastor is anti-Choice and once called rape victims “worse than Hitler.” His church also “disciplined” a female church member for wanting to divorce her husband after she discovered he was watching adult videos sexually exploiting children. The man was later prosecuted by the FBI. After a huge backlash, the church issued an apology.

A woman in the congregation complained about Instagram messages the pastor was sending to her friend. Elders in his church reviewed the comments the pastor had made on Instagram. They thought it was unhealthy.

The pastor said. “The Word of God holds me to a certain standard. And I fell short.”

Anyone can make mistakes and fall from grace. It could be worse when it is someone who is in a position of leadership who is preaching for people to live a good life as free from sin as possible. They are held to a higher standard.

The pastor had said that he thought the conversations with the woman on Instagram were not wrong. He said his wife knew about them as did the woman’s husband. Others thought they were inappropriate.

Life can throw us curves without us realizing it. People can do acts which they think are completely innocent but which may be damaging to their reputation and their future. Life is challenging, and people need to be vigilant.
